Wallow Fire: Close for Native American Tribes
The Wallow fire in the Bear Wallow Wilderness area is one of the largest recorded wildfires in Arizona history. Nearby reservation communities from southern Arizona to New Mexico have been affected by smoke and preparations for possible evacuations and make-shift animal shelters. National Relief Charities has been in touch with many of our Program Partners from the White Mountain Apache, San Carlos Apache, and Navajo Tribes to keep tabs on the fire and smoke and any risk of displacement for their people. Thus far, none of the reservation communities where we work have been asked to evacuate. But as the Arizona Republic reported on Sunday, the fire did cross onto Fort Apache (White Mountain) lands. The tribe credits sweat lodge prayers and beneficent winds with helping them dodge the fire.
National Relief Charities wishes to remind the tribes in AZ and NM, and throughout our service area, that we have a disaster relief service in place to help your communities during emergencies caused by fires, floods, tornadoes, or blizzards. Just call us when you need support.
