The Challenges of Isolation

On March 10, Helen made the point that enhanced digital access has the potential to improve opportunities for people who may otherwise remain isolated and disenfranchised simply due to where they live. This made me think about isolation.

Many American Indian reservation communities are located in harsh, remote and sparsely populated areas. The isolation of these communities presents a host of challenges. The people who live in the communities are challenged with lack of access to basic services, transportation issues and few employment opportunities. Being “out of sight” means the communities are often overlooked when improvements come to more populated areas.

National Relief Charities, as an organization that serves these communities, is also challenged by this issue of isolation. We are very committed to delivering support supplies directly to our partners who live and work in rural communities. Our drivers are on the road daily trucking supplies in a 12-hour radius from both of our regional distribution centers. This type of consistent delivery of goods is something that sets NRC apart.
