School Supplies Make an Impact: Notes & Quotes

MORE NOTES FROM OUR SCHOOL SUPPLY STUDENTS:

1.  “First I want to say hello and good day! My name is Tegan and I am a junior in high school. I am writing in regards to an event” that happened here. It was a stressful day for me, but while in my homeroom I got exactly what I needed. One of the office staff was handing out bags of’ goodies… When I got my bag, I looked inside and there were some notebooks, pencils, and other school materials. Some other supplies were there as well and it made a delightful change from the usual course of the day. I am writing to say thank you for sending us these gifts… it was the highlight of my day. Speaking of highlight, I am currently still using the pack of highlighters from the bag!! Thanks again! PS-The bag has also boosted the morale of many students within the school so I would like to give you our thanks from Student Council! Best Regards.” Tegan, Student Council Vice President – Pinon High School – Navajo Reservation

 2.  “Thank you for the binders, paper, scissors, school bags and the other great things you have sent us. I hope if I was a grown up I would done the same thing for you or the children.”  Brett, 6th grade

3.  ” I am really thankful for the supplies you gave my class, if you haven’t given this to us we would be without things. Thank you very much for the supplies you filled the bags with and I really depend on it very much.”  Sirena B., 5th grade – Pinon, AZ

 4.  “Thank you for the school stuff and the bags. If you didn’t send the supplies I would have just sat here looking for a pencil.”  Tomas – Pinon, AZ

 5.  “Thank you for the school Supply. My parents can’t buy me supply. It’s like Christmas again.”  Winter, 3rd grade – Mexican Hat, UT

6. ” Thank you for the backpack and the stuff that was in the pack and the water bottle. I appreciate your kindness and next year I hope that you do the same thing again. Mom and dad struggle to buy us kids school supplies. I will try hard in school and go to high school and go to college so I will have a good life time.”  Zachery – Kayenta, AZ

NOTES FROM PARENTS, GUARDIANS & SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS:

1.  “I know of families that have transferred their children into another school just to get the school supplies being offered at another site.”  Elementary teacher, Little Wound School – Pine Ridge Reservation

2.  “I am a grandmother who has recently lost my husband. We have raised many of our grandchildren throughout the years as a team, today I am alone, I live on a fixed income but I am still raising some of the children. I called Kay at the [Winnebago] school because someone told me she could possibly help…  A backpack with all the supplies was given to me when I arrived. I was so grateful… This is a wonderful program and I am glad that Winnebago Schools can be a part of it. I know there are many grandparents in this community who feel as I do and live as I do, I am only one.”  Andrea P. – Winnebago Reservation

 3.  “Every little bit helps. If it wasn’t for programs like these I would be struggling. To purchase a bag like this would cost at least $40, not including the gas money to go to Pierre which takes me about an hour and a half to travel to.”  Vince C.E., Guardian – Cheyenne River Reservation

 4.  “These supplies helped our school kick off the literacy campaign for AR-Accelerated Reading in the homes. All supplies were wonderful, we did not expect so much and were amazed as were our students.”  School Administrator – Navajo Reservation

5.  “The donation of school supplies absolutely helps our families. It also helps our teachers who try to supply students themselves. What arrived in the backpacks this year is enormously helpful. 100 percent of our students are on the free and reduced lunch program. There is a great deal of unemployment on this reservation. The fact of the matter is that many families cannot afford to buy this type of backpack and supplies for their kids…it’s a godsend. There are some kids whose families can afford the supplies. It is difficult when there are dynamics between the “haves and have-nots.” Like anywhere else this creates feelings of bitterness, resentment, sense of hopelessness and really impacts on self esteem. This year all of the kids will start school with a nice backpack and supplies. When it comes to school all of the kids will be equipped and on equal footing and that is a wonderful thing.”  Dr. Slocum, Superintendent – Cheyenne River Schools
