A Chronicle on Poverty’s Chill

Poverty's Chill - SWIRC-Winter Fuel-Smith Lake 3-Carrie James

Laura mentioned that many of our services are utilized by our partners at the highest rate in the winter months. Winters in the areas NRC serves are very harsh and weathering them safely often involves additional expenses to a family budget. Having increased fuel expenses, stocking up on food and other supplies, and purchasing warm coats or boots, are additional expenses that can break a struggling family’s budget. As Helen noted, winter is dangerous. People who are not prepared for cold snaps can suffer frostbite in their own homes!

NRC’s winter services are aimed at helping people endure the bitter weather safely. The support we provide allows some people, especially Elders, to avoid making the difficult choice between heating their home OR buying their medications. Please see this article in this week’s Chronicle of Philanthropy that highlights one of the participants in our winter fuel service.
